DevOps and Infrastructure – Coming Together at HPE Discover.

In 2009 the software world started talking about a new term – DevOps. It has since grown to be one of the hottest trends in software, with Gartner stating that by 2016 over 25% of the Global 2000 will be using it. Yet, in 2017 the #1 Google search containing the term DevOps is “What is DevOps?”

Micron and HP, Inc. deliver FIPS 140-2 Validated data security in Business-class notebooks

At Micron, we’ve been building secure SSDs, with hardware-based encryption, and leveraging well-recognized industry standards for the past several years. Just in the past several months, we’ve taken the next step and added government certifications in the form of the FIPS 140-2 Level 2 Validations for our enterprise SAS SSD, the S650DC (Cert #2667), as well as the client SATA SSD, the 1100 (Cert #2848).

Flashy OLTP: Amazing, Consistent Performance (and more power efficient, too!)

When I think about what matters in OLTP, the first thing that leaps to my head (and maybe some of yours too) is performance – raw performance. There’s nothing like super-speedy Orders Per Minute (OPM) to get some attention. The faster they go, the more we get, the better.

Release the Kraken!

How fast can a Ceph implementation go? As a Principal Storage Solutions Engineer with Micron, I am tasked with figuring that out. I was proud to announce Micron’s All-NVMe Ceph® reference architecture at the OpenStack Summit 2017 in Boston. It’s based on Red Hat® Ceph Storage 2.1 (Jewel 10.2) and it is crazy fast.

How NVMe can change the life of your data.

I was talking to one of our customers recently, and he made a comment that really stuck with me. He was talking about his business today and the intense pressure his team is under to deliver faster and faster. His job is all about empowering his team to build applications in the cloud and do it at a much accelerated pace. The comment: “What used to take months now takes minutes.”

The evolution of data center storage - and what’s next.

I was thinking the other day about how today’s data center environment has changed over the years and how those changes were influenced by some interesting trends. History has always been a hobby of mine and thinking about the history of technology is especially of interest (maybe because I have lived through so much of it ). Anyway, I think one key item of interest in this discussion is how storage technology has changed over the years and along with that change, altered the way we use, deploy and manage storage in the data center. While I am not going to go all the way back to the stone-age of magnetic tape as a primary storage solution – I am not that old – it is interesting to trace how we have moved from tape to spinning media and now to solid-state storage solution.

NVMe over Fabrics…Taking it to the Next Level

In my previous post, we took a little ‘spin’ down memory lane and talked about the history of storage interfaces and protocols. I leave it to the reader to review that post if you have not read it already, but the bottom line of that discussion was that the industry came up with the NVMe protocol over PCIe interfaces to address the inherent bottlenecks of previous storage technologies such as SAS and SATA. So, with NVMe all things in the world are good…right?

Get 36% Faster Hadoop – Without Adding Servers

When IT needs better Hadoop performance from their HDD-based nodes, they typically have two options: They can add more nodes to the existing cluster. This may help meet performance goals, but the incremental cost of the added nodes may be prohibitive. Alternatively, they can replace the current cluster nodes with new ones. Rebuilding with higher performance nodes may meet performance goals, but the cost is higher still. Now there is a third choice that enables better performance and economics: add Micron’s 9100PRO NVMe SSD to existing HDD-based cluster nodes.

Protecting Micron’s Intellectual Property

Over the last few weeks, the criminal prosecutor’s office in Taiwan conducted a series of investigative activities that resulted in the recent arrests of individuals for the suspected theft and misuse of Micron’s intellectual property. Micron supports these initiatives and is cooperating fully with the authorities to bring forward all the facts.
