The top 3 questions to ask when researching SSD performance numbers.

Often when we look at SSD specifications, the first thing that pops out are the ‘hero’ numbers. These are the numbers that manufacturers and their marketing departments use to promote the superiority of their product. They also typically come with a big, giant asterisk attached to let you know how they got to those numbers. Every industry has their own hero numbers. For instance, car manufacturers will show you the time it takes their car to get from zero to 60 mph and SSD manufacturers will show you random write performance numbers.

How to securely erase Micron SATA SSDs - why data sanitization matters.

We are in an era where protecting sensitive information is crucially important, protecting data on storage devices is critical at every step in the life cycle of these devices, including at end-of-life and when devices are redeployed to other purposes. Because of this, the ability to ensure that user data is securely erased from a data storage device is critical. Micron’s SSDs provide very effective and efficient means to do so. In fact, SSDs can provide tremendous advantages over HDDs with regard to the speed and security of the full-drive erase functions.

The Business Case for NVMe PCIe SSDs

Data-intensive businesses that thrive in today’s environment move quickly, and data centers must move with them. To that end, technologies—such as 40-gigabit (and faster) Ethernet and multicore servers—are chasing latency out of the data center. One of the easiest targets for latency removal is the spinning platters of a server’s direct attached storage, its hard disk drives (HDDs).

New server architectures will speed NVMe adoption

NVMe is breaking the storage bottleneck. You’ve likely heard the tales of its huge bandwidth and latency measured in microseconds instead of milliseconds. It’s close to your computing power and lightning-fast. You’ve heard about how it’s dramatically changing applications and performance expectations. But you may have also caught whispers about needing something new to support NVMe – something about next-gen servers, or a kind of special slot for NVMe drives. Does this mean you can’t get the benefits of NVMe today?

“Collaboretition” – a new paradigm for sustainability

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) blogs and newswires in the tech sector have recently been abuzz with the news that Tim Mohin (formerly with AMD, Intel & Apple) has been named the new Chief Executive of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the leading global framework for sustainability reporting. Equally interesting is the attention given to his most recent comments around the term “collaboretition.”

Need More From Your OLTP Platform?

An OLTP workload is one of the most demanding in the Enterprise. With OLTP, it seems that everything matters. Order processing rates matter. Average response time matters. Response consistency matters. Moreover, with changing datacenter economics and value metrics, the amount of space in the rack also matters. If OLTP matters to you, you probably know that SSDs can help.

You need a storage strategy. Here’s how to get started.

Having been around the IT block a few times in my career, it strikes me that the industry in general, and storage specifically, are cyclical in nature. From centralized mainframes, to distributed client/server implementations and back again, much of the forward motion depends on the technology available to support what are sometimes not new ideas, but better ways to innovate on their implementation. We’ve got to maximize the value of what we already have, while always keeping that watchful eye for what’s leading and bleeding, both technically and culturally.
