The differences between client and server SSDs can be vital to your data center.

In my role at Micron, I talk to a lot of Operations and Client/Server Admins who are stumped on why there are so many similar SSDs on the market from Micron and other vendors. It’s a good question – when you see two seemingly-identical SSDs on your favorite shopping website, but notice the server/enterprise version costs way more than the one that is designed for client devices like laptops, it can be confusing.

What do fast cars and fast storage have in common?

When I was younger, I had friends with fast cars. Kids with fast cars like to see just how fast they are. Now that I have a few (well…many) more years of wisdom, I still appreciate fast – but differently.

SSD data centers are inevitable, smart and affordable. But don’t just take our word for it.

It’s interesting to watch the velocity at which technology progresses, in many cases at an exponential rate that is both thrilling and mind boggling. How does one disseminate the vast amount of new technology information and decide what is crucial for the success and growth of their business? For years, the experts at Gartner have helped organizations and business leaders to do this very thing - evaluate the latest IT trends, and understand how they affect an organization, and one’s individual professional growth.

The top 3 questions to ask when researching SSD performance numbers.

Often when we look at SSD specifications, the first thing that pops out are the ‘hero’ numbers. These are the numbers that manufacturers and their marketing departments use to promote the superiority of their product. They also typically come with a big, giant asterisk attached to let you know how they got to those numbers. Every industry has their own hero numbers. For instance, car manufacturers will show you the time it takes their car to get from zero to 60 mph and SSD manufacturers will show you random write performance numbers.

How to securely erase Micron SATA SSDs - why data sanitization matters.

We are in an era where protecting sensitive information is crucially important, protecting data on storage devices is critical at every step in the life cycle of these devices, including at end-of-life and when devices are redeployed to other purposes. Because of this, the ability to ensure that user data is securely erased from a data storage device is critical. Micron’s SSDs provide very effective and efficient means to do so. In fact, SSDs can provide tremendous advantages over HDDs with regard to the speed and security of the full-drive erase functions.

The Business Case for NVMe PCIe SSDs

Data-intensive businesses that thrive in today’s environment move quickly, and data centers must move with them. To that end, technologies—such as 40-gigabit (and faster) Ethernet and multicore servers—are chasing latency out of the data center. One of the easiest targets for latency removal is the spinning platters of a server’s direct attached storage, its hard disk drives (HDDs).

New server architectures will speed NVMe adoption

NVMe is breaking the storage bottleneck. You’ve likely heard the tales of its huge bandwidth and latency measured in microseconds instead of milliseconds. It’s close to your computing power and lightning-fast. You’ve heard about how it’s dramatically changing applications and performance expectations. But you may have also caught whispers about needing something new to support NVMe – something about next-gen servers, or a kind of special slot for NVMe drives. Does this mean you can’t get the benefits of NVMe today?
